Following are the ethical responsibilities of professional and volunteer community librarians towards members:
- We shall encourage and support members in their age-appropriate, independent choice of reading materials.
- We shall strive to give members access to varying points of view and ideas.
- We shall do all in our power to protect members from physical harm. (See also child safety and protection policy).
- We shall do all in our power to protect members from embarrassment or other emotional harm.
- We shall not treat members differently on the basis of their caste, race, gender, national origin, marital status, political or religious beliefs, economic, social or cultural background, or sexual orientation: all are welcome.
- We shall treat all members equally and will avoid “special relationships” and the perception of special relationships or favoritism with members both inside and outside the library. Favoritism may include giving members access to special food or activities and extra attention in person or on social media.
- To help maintain the safety of our members, we shall avoid physical contact with members, including hugging, kissing, having them sit on our laps, etc.
- We shall not disclose personal information about members obtained in the course of library work unless disclosure serves a compelling professional purpose or is required by law. (See also social media guidelines

- We shall be respectful of the values, beliefs and customs of the parents of our members and the diverse communities we operate in.
- We recognize the importance of the parents of our student library members and commit to be respectful to them at all times.
